Smoker’s Delight

This is my favourite photo from my recent street photography adventure in Galway City. I asked him could I take his photo and he didn’t mind at all. He seemed very content; sitting outside a pub on Quay Street with a pint and a fag just watching the world go by.

I posted two photos; one showing his pint and cigarette smoke, the other one cropped tighter. I prefer the un-cropped one. How about you, which do you prefer?

I think I like this street photography lark; it’s different than ‘normal’ photography. You don’t get time to compose, take multiple photos, check settings etc. It’s more off the cuff and it’s exciting to look through the photos at home with anticipation to see if I got any good photos. (Sad, aren’t I?)

  • I’m liking your recent forays into street photography, I should really try and get out and about in Galway and try some street shots myself, but it sure is hard to find interesting subjects in such a small city sometimes. I think you’re right about the tighter crop on this one. The cigarette smoke and the blue blackground add a lot to this pic. Nice work.

    • Thanks. I agree with you, Galway is a small city/town so I suppose that’s one of the reasons I’m always looking for new projects/stuff to photograph. I’m going to try some gig, sports photography on top of the street photography.

The tighter crop works for me – less distractions and more emphasis on the characters face – good capture!

    • Thanks for the comment. I like both but have to say I prefer the photo without the crop. To me it shows the man and what he’s doing. I suppose a lot of photos are tight crop so this differs slightly and is showing the full environment.
