Blue Sky. Mine (First and last HDR shot)

HDR sky

HDR is (not my cup of tea) a set of techniques that allow a greater dynamic range of luminances between the lightest and darkest areas of an image than standard digital imaging techniques or photographic methods. This wider dynamic range allows HDR images to more accurately represent the wide range of intensity levels found in real scenes, ranging from direct sunlight to faint starlight

Title taken from the album Blue Sky Mine by the Australian Band Midnight Oil.

I want to ride my bicycle (FBD Insurance bicycle race)

In h. Sport by admin / May 26, 2010 / 0 Comments

The FBD Insurance RÁS Cycle Race is an 8 Day International Cycle Race around Ireland. I took these pictures at the Galway leg of the race but found photographing them tougher than I expected- the riders were grouped and ‘gone in 60 seconds’ (or less). So I didn’t really have much time for trial and error, seeing what the best settings were, where to stand etc. I took a lot of photos and was happy with these ones.

I shot with a 55-300 standard lens and stood in a roundabout at the cresent of a hill, which was good for when they were coming up the hill and not racing as quickly as normal. Ideally, it’d be great if they were doing a few circuits and if I had a 70-200 f2.8 lens (someday).

There’s something pleasant about a bright blue sky cut across by a simple straight airplane trail. Here’s a collection of some I’ve taken. For a few of them I’ve been driving so pulled over quickly (and safely, obviously), raced to get my camera and grab a shot.

Colours (Galway Market)

In a. Galway,g.Colourful by admin / April 11, 2010 / 1 Comment

Galway’s famous bustling market has been trading in Church lane by St Nicholas’ Church in the centre of the city for literally centuries. The market is open Saturdays and Bank Holidays from 8am to 6pm and Sundays 2pm to 6pm. It’s a small, tight market but still there’s a great variety of food available, Madras curry, Crepes, Japanese Sushi, handmade chocolates among many others .

Yesterday I woke up sucking a lemon

I was at the Galway Greyhound track last night. It”s very hard to get a good shot of the dogs (they”re so quick and I didn’t have a fast zoom lens). These are my best shots from the evening. I’ll go back again once I have an (expensive) fast zoom (70-200 f2.8 hopefully)

Thank You For The Good Times (In memory of John, my dad)

In d. People & Animals by admin / March 4, 2010 / 1 Comment

John, my dad (I always called my parents by their names) passed away 10 years ago today.
This is a photo taken on his honeymoon with my mum, Ute in Egypt. I’ve always liked photogrpahy, must have gotten the bug from my dad. I remember one birthday many moons ago he gave me an slr as a present but all I saw was a big, clunky camera. So I was disappointed and would have preferred an easy-to-use compact. Looking back now I realise that he had my best interests at heart and probably wanted to teach photography to me instead of me just snapping away with a compact. I wish I could thank him now but can’t so instead I think fondly of him when I’m taking pictures.

The lone rider

I was driving through Lackagh when I saw this cyclist coming towards me from out of the fog. I quickly pulled over, grabbed my camera and managed to snap him before he cycled past. I like the atmosphere that the fog adds to the picture.

Ballymaloe Restaurant and Country House, home to Darinna and Rachel Allen. It’s a location made for relaxation- the bedrooms don’t have any televisions, nothing to do but just unwind, have a stroll and eat.
Some friends, Ronan and Cliona got married here last year, a memorable wedding.
