Vinyl Record Photographs

In b. Abstract/Arty by admin / November 6, 2015 / 0 Comments

I own a macro lens, love music so recently I wanted to try photographing the grooves in a vinyl record. So I bought a Columbia long play vinyl record in my local charity store and brought it home to begin photographing it. Unfortunately I realised that when viewing macro photos of the grooves that you can spot dust/static build up EVERYWHERE. As I don’t have an anti-static record cleaning brush I decided to focus on the packaging & also take some abstract photos of the vinyl.

In the first two photos I wanted to show the care that is needed with vinyl; most young people nowadays have probably never held a vinyl record so these guidelines would be alien to them. The first photo shows the vinyl is old; the text is beginning to fade, the record cover is wrinkled and creased.

Vinyl Abstract Photos

Abstract is my favourite style of photography so I had to try to capture some abstract photos and am very pleased with these results. In the first vinyl abstract photo I went for a very minimalistic look, turned the vinyl to pitch black while saturating the colours to make the photo pop.

The last vinyl abstract photo is my favourite, maybe because it’s the most abstract and colourful. I set the shutter to 1/2 a second and panned the lens across the vinyl grooves. In post-processing I played around with a few settings to obtain the colourful effects. For some people this could be an awful photo but I love it.

Inverted Coloured Straws (Cherry Coloured Funk)

A bunch of straws turned into an abstract photograph by inverting the colours of the photograph.

Cherry Coloured Funk is a song from the album Heaven Or Las Vegas by the magnificent Cocteau Twins. I think the colours in this photography vaguely match the abstrct colours on the album cover Heaven Or Las Vegas.

Colours and colours and colours of colours (Limerick Photowalk)

In g.Colourful by admin / March 21, 2011 / 0 Comments

This is my last set from the Limerick Photowalk (I promise!). These aren’t the leftovers, I have loads of them, trust me. The theme of this set is colour. It was a dull, rainy day in Limerick so I sought to seek out colour amongst the drabness and dullness.

It was a very pleasurable walk and nice to see some first-timers join us. I’m looking forward to the next one already.

Also here’s a video of some of my photos from the photowalk- Limerick Photowalk video.

What Does Your Soul Look Like (Rothko imitation)

In b. Abstract/Arty,g.Colourful by admin / December 4, 2010 / 0 Comments

At work one of our current competition categories is ‘Abstract’.
These photos are two I took at home tonight, one a Rothko copy and one trying to convey a human soul.
The sunset through my back door reminds me of the Russian-born American abstract painter Rothko.

Human soul- This one was just messing around but I kind of like it. It’s my breath, taken standing outside my back door in the (very) cold. The photo on it’s own it very forgetful but when you associate it to a human soul escaping a dead body then breathes (no pun intended) a whole new life into the photo.

Busy Bee on a flower

A bee working away in my back garden. I zoomed into 250mm to try not to disturbe the bee (or get stung). It was hard to get a shot with a good position but here you can literally see him collecting the nectar. The bee collects nectar, while pollen collects on its body

There’s something pleasant about a bright blue sky cut across by a simple straight airplane trail. Here’s a collection of some I’ve taken. For a few of them I’ve been driving so pulled over quickly (and safely, obviously), raced to get my camera and grab a shot.

Colours (Galway Market)

In a. Galway,g.Colourful by admin / April 11, 2010 / 1 Comment

Galway’s famous bustling market has been trading in Church lane by St Nicholas’ Church in the centre of the city for literally centuries. The market is open Saturdays and Bank Holidays from 8am to 6pm and Sundays 2pm to 6pm. It’s a small, tight market but still there’s a great variety of food available, Madras curry, Crepes, Japanese Sushi, handmade chocolates among many others .

Yesterday I woke up sucking a lemon

Maximo Park Graffiti

Maximo park graffiti bench in Berlin, Germany

Maximo Park Graffiti

“I’ll do graffiti if you sing to me in French, What are you doing here if romance isn’t dead”
Mind your mouth as you walk with me,Take care ooh as you cross the street”

I saw this park bench when walking through a park in Berlin and Maximo Park just popped into my head. I always wondered what’s correct grammatically; does one ‘do’ graffiti?

Post title is the name of a British Rock Band Maximo Park and a song title of theirs ‘Graffiti’.

Taken with my IPhone (all I had on me at the time), it came out surprisingly well. Nothing is in sharp focus but it’s still nice and colourful. The course is Carnmore Golf Club.

Some pictures from wandering around Galway Docks (sounds seedy, doesn’t it?). It’s a great place for photographing I think- lots of colour, boats old and new, water etc.
