Galway vs Dublin gaelic Division 1 league

Galway hosted Dublin in Pearse stadium, Salthill in Galway. Galway had already qualified for the Division 1 league final, Dublin only needing 1 point from their remaining 2 games. But this was still a hard hitting, competitive match.

Galway held a 5 point lead at halftime but with the wind in the second half Dublin powered back (don’t they always?) and looked like winning the match by going 0-13 to 0-12 up deep in injury time. The Dublin team then appeared to try to close the game down, I managed to capture some photos of the ‘action’:

Pairc Ui Chaoimh

Páirc Uí Chaoimh is a Gaelic games stadium in Cork, Ireland, home to Cork GAA. Pairc Ui Chaoimh stadium is located in Ballintemple and is built on the site of the original Cork Athletic Grounds. The venue opened in 1976, and underwent a significant redevelopment from 2015 to 2017. You can view images of the completed stadium on http://paircuichaoimh.ie/

I’m used to large crowds in Pairc Ui Caoimh on sunny summer Sundays seeing Cork yet win another hurling or football game (the glorious ’80s and ’90s). In 2011 I was walking with my son around the Atlantic Pond was allowed into the stadium to have a wander around. I know Pairc Ui Caoimh was opened in 1976, so you could call it an old stadium but I was still amazed at how small and dark the changing rooms were.

American football has a lot of fixed formation and lineouts. By using a slow shutter speed I managed to make the players look like a moving blur but also managed to capture the sense of power and speed.

All Ireland Hurling Final 2013

I was lucky enough to get a ticket for the All Ireland hurling final 2013 (for face value) on the morning of the match. I had my compact camera with me so only took a few ‘snaps’ before throw in and then put it away to enjoy the match.

Cork and Clare drew the fantastic match and will have to do it all again at the end of September.

Semple Stadium, home to Tipperary GAA

The GAA is close to the heart of many Irishmen and women. Local GAA hurling and gaelic football clubs are in every village and town across Ireland are a great source of pride. Tipperary is the home of hurling and Semple Stadium is the home stadium to Tipperary GAA. Semple Stadium is where Tipperary play their (great) hurling and football. Located in Thurles, County Tipperary, it is the second largest stadium in Ireland (after Croke Park), with a capacity of 53,000. Opened in 1926, it hosted many memorable Munster Hurling Finals.

I remember being present at the 1987 Munster final with my father. We watched in anguish as Nicky English lost his hurley but managed to dribble the sliothar with his foot and kick it past the mighty Cork goalkeeper Ger Cunningham to help Tipperary earn a draw. Tipperary went on to demolish Cork in extra time of the replay and win by 3 goals. (I’m from Cork, who used to be a strong hurling team. Currently they’re in a state of transition.)

The colours of Tipperary are blue and yellow and these colours are reflected throughout Semple Stadium. Normally Semple stadium is packed with fans so people don’t get a chance to see the beauty of the empty stadium; it’s strong colours, patterns and designs of the stadium. These photographs were taken with a smartphone, proving the phrase that the best camera you have is the one you have with you. I was driving through Thurles and was lucky that the stadium was open, allowing me in.

OTHER GAA STADIUMS I’VE PHOTOGRAPHED

To date I’ve photographed three empty GAA stadiums in Ireland (Galway’s Pearse stadium and Cork’s Pairc Ui Chaoimh). I hope to photograph some more over the next few years. Ironically Croke Park, the largest and most modern GAA stadium in Ireland, I found very plain and uninteresting to photography.

One of the things I love about the Galway Races is the mixed crowds; loads of country farmers and thousands upon thousands of young people dressed up to the nines. I like the old gentleman looking away as the two women walk past.

After I posted this someone said it’d look good in black and white so I’ve added it after the colour.

The Galway Races

Galway in the summertime equals festivals. And the biggest is festival is The Galway Races which over 132,000 people attended in 2012. It’s a mammoth of a horse racing festival that spans 7 days of racing and 7 days and nights of partying & drinking all around Galway. In the past many large companies in Galway used to close for the week of the races. “It’s not about the racing” is a commonly heard saying around town.

This photograph shows an empty and silent racecourse, the total opposite of what the Ballybrit race track will be like very soon. I’ll try to take another photography from the exact same location during the races.

Connacht rugby club played their last game of the Rabo Direct Pro 12 season at The Sportsground in Galway against The Glasgow Warriors. Glasgow Warriors won the rugby match 20-3. DTH van der Merwe and Sean Mullins scored the tries for Glasgow Warriors
It was Eric Elwood’s last game as manager and over 6,000 spectators turned up on a wet evening.

Brussels Skateboarding Park

During my recent holiday in Brussels I came across a skateboarding park and snapped some photos of the kids hanging out there.
I returned two days later with my sports lens and some dedicated time to capture the skateboarders in action. But, unfortunately there was only a few very young kids there and they weren’t throwing any great shapes. Still, I like the vibe in these photos and think I caught the ‘too cool for school’ attitude of the kids.

Wicked Game (The Art of making a hurley stick )

Hurling.

The quickest field game in the world.I spent a weekend in Kilkenny recently and on Sunday morning was wandering around Kilkenny Castle grounds. There was a small marque set up and a hurley (camán in Irish) maker inside showing how a hurley is made. Tom O’ Donoghue was his name, a very friendly guy who showed us the process of making a hurley- from the block of wood, the tools used to cut and finish it off. A very interesting process.

Hurling is an outdoor team game of ancient Gaelic origin, administered by the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA). Hurling has prehistoric origins, has been played for at least 3,000 years and is thought to be the world’s fastest field team game in terms of game play.
Hurleys are made from ash wood, the base of the tree near the root is the only part used.

This is the second series of photographs of my new runners- VIVOBAREFOOT Evo.

The second photograph shows how breathable the runners are; the photograph on the right shows a macro of one of the hexagons. You can see that it’s made up of some kind of overlapping material with miniature holes which allow my foot to keep cool. The third photograph shows how flexible they are. And the last one just mucking about with Picasa settings.

Post title is taken from the song “Pumped Up Kicks” by Foster The People. For me it was the feelgood hit of last summer.

So I got a new pair of runners recently; VIVOBAREFOOT Evo. A pair of runners with a difference. And then some. VIVOBAREFOOT are what you call minimalist running shoes; extremely thin, lightweight runners that are meant to be “as close to going barefoot as you can.” They’re part of the barefoot movement and running community.

Modern running shoes are like a barge around your feet, disconnecting them from the ground in many ways. Runners like VIVOBAREFOOT are the opposite; you feel more and your feet are strengthened, stimulated more and you also exercise your
calves, thighs, gluts, the lower back and abdomen, increasing your core strength.

I had great, great fun last week at go-karting at the Indoor Go-Karting track at Liosban, Galway. It was the most fun I’ve had in a while, more like bumpers than go-karting and anything went; bumping, cutting in etc. Must try it again soon.

This is my second set of photos from Páirc Ui Chaoimh, home to Cork GAA hurling and football.
These photos some an empty stadium and shows the patterns and colours on the stand and terrace, which is normally hidden/covered by fans.
The last photo isn’t staged, Conor saw the flag, ran over and started waving it.

Where We Sported And Played- Pairc Ui Chaoimh

Pairc Ui Caoimh stadium, home to Cork GAA

Pairc Ui Caoimh a Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) stadium in the Ballintemple area of Cork in Ireland, where major hurling and Gaelic football matches are played and home of Cork GAA. Pairc Ui Caoimh had an original capacity of about 50,000, however, this capacity has been progressively reduced because of safety regulations to the current figure of 43,500.

I’m used to large crowds in Pairc Ui Caoimh on sunny Sundays in the summer and seeing Cork win another hurling or football game. I was walking with Conor, my son there a weekend over the summer and was allowed into the stadium to have a wander around. I know Pairc Ui Caoimh is an old stadium but I was amazed at how basic the changing rooms are (see 2nd last photo).

Here’s some photos from the Galway Races Summer Festival. It was only my second outing with my Sigma 70-200 f2.8 sports lens so I’m still getting to grips with it.

They’re far from great, not even that good. I was there for 2 races only (free in for last two races) so I didn’t have much time to plan where to stand etc. So most of the photos are from the same vantage point.

I’ve loved trainers since I was a child and lucky enough to own a pair of Nike Air Jordan IV. Now that I’m 35 I can’t claim to be a child anymore but still love trainers. So I was obviously delighted when a pair of Adidas Gazelles fell into my lap. Retro Adidas trainers are COOL, no denying it. Heck, even Run DMC have a song entitled My Adidas. So hjere’s my homage to the Adidas Gazelle trainers, a timeless classic

I tried my hand at a few abstract photos at the recent Ireland vs. Macedonia game in Dublin.
One reason is because I was sitting far away from the pitch it limited the amount of ‘proper’ sport action photos that I could take so I though I’ll try something else. I have three photos here, the first one is my favourite, I feel that it kind of convays the burst of energy when Robbie Keane is sprinting for the ball.

Exposure 1/6th of a second to achieve the blurry effect

The last two aren’t even that good I think but I’m just posting them anyway to show what I was trying to do with them. If I could have zoomed in on a player closer and kept him sharper/in focus then I think they’d be better.

I want to ride my bicycle (FBD Insurance bicycle race)

The FBD Insurance RÁS Cycle Race is an 8 Day International Cycle Race around Ireland. I took these pictures at the Galway leg of the race but found photographing them tougher than I expected- the riders were grouped and ‘gone in 60 seconds’ (or less). So I didn’t really have much time for trial and error, seeing what the best settings were, where to stand etc. I took a lot of photos and was happy with these ones.

I shot with a 55-300 standard lens and stood in a roundabout at the cresent of a hill, which was good for when they were coming up the hill and not racing as quickly as normal. Ideally, it’d be great if they were doing a few circuits and if I had a 70-200 f2.8 lens (someday).

I was at the Galway Greyhound track last night. It”s very hard to get a good shot of the dogs (they”re so quick and I didn’t have a fast zoom lens). These are my best shots from the evening. I’ll go back again once I have an (expensive) fast zoom (70-200 f2.8 hopefully)

Old Trafford, Theatre of Dreams, Manchester United

I took this (with a standard compact) on a tour of Old Trafford (Theatre of Dreams), home stadium to football team Manchester United. I found it a very interesting tour. But then again I enjoy football stadium tours in general because it allows me to ask multiple questions and you get to learn some interesting trivia and facts ( the rainwater that falls on the roofs is ‘recycled’ and used for the toilets).

All The Pretty Little Horses (Galway Races)

(Galway Races 2009): These are my best action photos from the Galway Races. The Galway Races are a massive social event in Galway and the town turns into a party zone for the week with many people not even visiting the races, just partying.
For these photos I was using my bridge camera (Panasonic FZ28) so i had a great zoom but the trade off was a low-ish aperture. This year (2011) I’ll have my Dslr (Pentax K-7) and a range of lenses but no ‘sports lens’ (70-200 f2.8 lens) so I’ll either have to use my 17-50mm f2.8 or the standard 18-250mm lens.

I’m looking forward to the Galway Races this year already; I have better equiptment so I’ll be able to compare some photos with these ones and see if there’s any improvement. Hopefully in a year or two I’ll have a sports lens and then won’t have any excuse not to capture the ‘perfect’ action photo.
